from us

Dear Readers,

With immense pride and pleasure, we present to you our One-Year Anniversary Issue! Each and every one of our readers, writers and advertisers contributes to our identity as Northeast Ohio's premier source for holistic information. Your love, support and passion are the forces that bring us to life and inspire us to grow.

The articles in this issue fit the theme of “Nurturing the Whole Child,” addressing body, mind and spirit in raising healthy, happy, well-balanced children. Nutritionist Stephanie Richards addresses the immense importance of whole foods and vitamins in a child's daily diet in her article, “Good Food, the Key to Healthy Children.” She offers essential information to parents on how to simply and effectively substitute healthier foods. We have expanded on this idea in other articles, too. In our recipes article, Brian Doyle offers some simple, kid-friendly options for meals. Plus, our restaurant review features Mom's Diner, an affordable restaurant that serves natural meats, eggs and dairy.

In her article “Educating the Whole Child,” Deborah Burke explores two distinct styles of education: Waldorf Schools and the Montessori Method. Although each takes a very different approach, they share a common goal of educating body, mind and spirit. Each of these developmentally based approaches recognizes and addresses each child as an individual.

Cynthia Sue Larsen discusses simple and effective ways to approach children about spiritual topics in her article, “Raising Spiritual Kids, Intuitively.” Both she and Judy McCracken, author of “What is Positive Parenting?” write about the incredible impact of positive comments on children. Positive comments open an avenue for discussion of difficult topics, as well as help to create an atmosphere for good behavior.

In this issue, we introduce a new regular column entitled “Ask Doctor Edwards” in which Tanya Edwards, M.D., M.Ed., responds to health-related questions submitted by our readers. Dr. Edwards is the Medical Director for the Center for Integrative Medicine and is a staff member in the Department of Family Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. She also teaches complementary and alternative medicine courses at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Finally, we officially invite you to our Fall Wellness Festival, which will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2004 on Trillium Creek's beautiful 30-acre campus in Medina. This event will offer fun, learning and activities for all ages. We hope you will join us in exploring holistic health, environmentalism and spirituality through lectures, workshops, exhibitors, music and more! Click here for more information. Please stop by our booth and introduce yourself. We are excited to meet you, our readers! We truly look forward to our next year together.

Much love,
Balanced Living Magazine

I think that your publication is very high quality in both content and advertising. The ads are informative, as they introduce a person interested in whole health to new vistas and opportunities for health and wellness.
I know that you toil many hours at making the deadline for each issue, and that you are committed to making a contribution to the community by living and working your mission statement of being "A resource for wellness and personal growth."
Your friends, readers and advertisers are proud of your accomplishments as you reach your first anniversary, and we extend great wishes for success for many years to come.

It's always a delight to tell clients and friends about Balanced Living Magazine because of the high-quality articles, interesting variety and great layout. I've seen numerous "holistic" magazines from around the country, and frankly, Balanced Living is at the top of the heap for its professional approach.

p.s. I love your staff!

I have loved reading all the articles in Balanced Living Magazine over the past year. I want to congratulate you on the breadth and depth of your content. As the Development Director of the Ursuline Sophia Center, I have found the magazine a wonderful companion for the Center and an invitation for us to explore more ways to bring integrative health to our friends and participants here at the Center.

I would like to mention a few articles that stayed with me. I was totally surprised by the cover and materials about the production of beer in Cleveland [Vol. I, Issue 2, November -December 2003]. Not having any direct interest in beer myself, I was pleased to hear about the consciousness of Great Lakes Brewing Company and salute your efforts in communicating that message. I was delighted by the article about water births [Vol. I, Issue 3, January –February 2004]. It was intriguing to read and it stretched my imagination to consider other venues for hospital procedures which we assume can only happen in sterile environments. I was moved by the article about Jackie Stevenson and the work she is doing to enhance women's healing [Vol. I, Issue 4, March – April 2004]. I was so enticed by the horse retreat that I signed up for one. I can happily report having enjoyed and benefitted from it immensely.

Thank you again and congratulations!

I am so glad there is such a positive magazine circulating in Cleveland! It is an easy source to find out about the businesses and people in the area that are making an effort to help with environmental issues, spirituality and health. It has helped me become more aware of many issues and subjects that I hadn't previously taken the time to address.

As I strive to live a healthy and positive life, a magazine such as Balanced Living Magazine helps me become more aware and educated. Balanced Living Magazine is a wonderful magazine to read!

Your covers always catch my eye and appeal to my view of the world...diverse and community-oriented. Keep up the good work on bringing articles of true importance to all. We need to be reminded that we are all one. When we come together peacefully with respect for each other and the planet we share, we can make a difference that will benefit generations to come.

I love your magazine. The articles, the pictures and the topics are all of interest to me. I even love the ads! It's a publication that was much needed in Cleveland. I hope your circulation grows and grows! Congratulations and best wishes for many more years of fine publishing.

Consumers of health and wellness have needed a magazine like Balanced Living for some time now in the Cleveland area, one that empowers by educating us with well-written articles on the "whos and whats" of health and wellness approaches, and how this might make a difference in our lives.
