Mosquitoes live all over the world (except Antarctica). They are attracted to skin temperature, moisture, movement and by-products of metabolism released through the breath and skin. Obviously, humans are a noticeable target! Swatting aside, what options do you have to keep those pesky – and occasionally disease carrying – buggers away?
Although not as effective or long lasting after application as their chemical counterparts, natural alternatives do exist. Wearing light colored clothing when mosquitoes are out makes you a little less noticeable than if you wear dark clothing. Beyond this, burning citronella candles or incense provides some protection. Look for beeswax or soy-based candles made with natural citronella oil.
An application of an essential oil can also thwart those biters. Try citronella, eucalyptus, lemon leaves, peppermint, lavender, cedar oil, canola, rosemary, pennyroyal, cajeput or a combination of them. To prepare, add 120 drops of the oil and 4 oz. witch hazel, rubbing alcohol, vodka or olive oil to a clean lotion bottle or spray bottle. Shake vigorously before applying, and be sure to reapply hourly for maximum effectiveness. Natural bug repellents can also be found at natural food stores or online. These should also be reapplied regularly. (Please note: pregnant women should seek medical advice before applying any of these products.)
Note that bug zappers kill many, many beneficial insects and are virtually useless against mosquitoes, which are much more attracted to humans than ultraviolet light. Besides, you'll be much more comfortable around the glow of citronella candles with nothing but the sounds of the night surrounding you.
