For years, experts have demonized the damaging rays from the blazing ball in the sky, the sun. While their advice to seek protection remains valid, it seems that quite a few people have become overzealous. Michael Holick, MD, a professor at Boston University School of Medicine and author of the book The UV Advantage, reports that 40% of Americans are vitamin D deficient, which can contribute to the development of Type I diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke and some cancers. Sun exposure is the most powerful generator of vitamin D in our bodies, and it cannot be replaced with supplements. According to Dr. Holick, sun exposure can also help alleviate skin conditions, improve autoimmune disorders and improve bone health. Ten to fifteen minutes of unprotected exposure is recommended daily.

However, if you are going to be out for longer, protective clothing, sunglasses and natural sunscreen are essential. Most conventional sunscreens contain harsh chemicals, preservatives and artificial fragrances, which can be allergy-causing, irritating and generally unhealthy to absorb into your body. Natural sunscreens are largely made with botanicals, vitamins, herbs and plant proteins. Look for those that also contain titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and PABA, and be sure to choose broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 (preferably 25 or higher) to protect against UVA and UVB rays. Other ingredients to consider may be milk thistle and shea butter, which also offer
protection, and green tea, which helps protect against skin cancer.
